Time for a Scarf

October 30, 2006

Last winter, I was seized by the need to make scarves. I had been making socks, which are truly wonderful things because they let you play with cool stitches and are almost guaranteed to fit, but all of a sudden, I needed to make scarves. This need was possibly fed by the desire to try a bunch of Knitpicks’ new yarns.

The first scarf I finished was Interlocking Balloons from Scarf Style, which I did in Knitpicks’ cashmere yarn — yummy stuff, but I think it’s going to pill. The yarn requirements were way off, for me — I had to order two more skeins to get to the right length. (Fortunately, they could, and did, send me the same dye lot.)

Next, I made the Backyard Leaves scarf, also from Scarf Style, in Knitpick’s Andean Silk. Another great yarn to work with (I think I need a sweater in this). I made three halves, since the first one was on needles that were too large, so the scarf was too short and the leaves weren’t very defined. I still haven’t quite figured out how to sew this up, so it’s still in pieces. Note to self…finish this one up!

Why mention this today? Well, a couple of days ago, I needed to make a scarf. Begins to look like a yearly affliction, doesn’t it? So, since I still had one set of yarn left from last year, I cast on for the Here and There Cables scarf, yet again from Scarf Style, again in Knitpicks’ Andean Silk. I got guage with needles one size down from the pattern, but the scarf-in-progress is way too wide — it’s 7 inches unblocked, when it’s supposed to be 7.5 inches blocked. When I pull it out so the cables show better, it’s more like 9 inches. And, each ball is supposed to get me about 9 inches of length, and this one looks to end at about 6. So, although it’s really pretty,…

heretherecablescarf04.JPGI’m going to start over. I might try small needles first, and fewer pattern repeats if that fails. The good side is that I’ve got the hang of the pattern (the cable turning is …um… unlike anything I’ve done before) so the reknit scarf should be much crisper on the first couple of inches.

Hello world!

October 14, 2006

I’ve decided I want a general project blog — both so I can show off what I’m doing and so I can keep track of things.  Hope this works!
